SHARK Explorer R Carbon Motorcycle Helmet
SHARK Explorer R Carbon motorcycle helmet is an unique light weight alternative for dual sport motorcyclists who are looking for more versatility from a single helmet. Most of us use the motorcycle also in everyday life, some of us have more than one bike and could enjoy of having two different helmets in one and that`s what the SHARK Explorer R Carbon is all about. A single helmet offers two configurations and transforms in few seconds from a full-face street motorcycle helmet to an allroad motorcycle helmet with offroad features. On top of that the SHARK Explorer R Carbon -motorcycle helmet has also few useful features such as a drop down sun visor, removable lining, extra space for eye wear and reservation for bluetooth communication systems. The helmet is well made from the inside out and the quality lies in the fine details.
SHARK Explorer R Carbon Motorcycle Helmet Features
The SHARK Explorer R Carbon helmet offers a controlled ventilation system that keeps the full-face visor fog free, but it`s not the most effective to cool down the head in hot conditions. This is a typical feature for street motorcycle helmets that are designed more compact, include special noise reduction features around the neck and have only few air vents. Therefore the Explorer R is hardy any match for highly ventilated offroad helmets such as the AIROH Aviator 2.1. Inside on top of the chin guard there is an air flow vent and a removable anti-fog mask which are both preventing the fog development. The helmet has a traditional intake vent in the middle of the chin bar and 2 on top of the helmet. All of them can be closed and opened according to need. In the rear the SHARK Explorer R Carbon has one exhaust vent with 2 holes. Additional relief for hot conditions could be arranged by choosing the full white color alternative. Even though the chin guard comes more forward like an offroad helmet, there is not enough room to put the hydration nozzle in the mouth while riding. The noise reduction panels on the bottom of the helmet come around the neck and close the cap in the front.
The SHARK Explorer R Carbon motorcycle helmet accepts eye wear very well. The SHARK Easy Fit provides the necessary space for sun glasses etc. which is important requirement for most of us and a clear comfort factor when riding all day long and repeatedly taking the helmet off and putting it back on. I use most of the time sun glasses and the rest of the time regular eyeglasses both with inflexible arms and without the free space the SHARK Explorer R Carbon helmet would probably brake the eyewear somewhere sooner than later, damage the skin and simply make the use of the helmet very uncomfortable. It should be a helmet standard of having enough space for the eyewear.
The SHARK Explorer R Carbon chinstrap and the SHARK Micro buckle is one of the quickest and simplest in use. The lock buckle itself has the fine adjustment which works good, but the strap adjustment type is not as user-friendly as the traditional double D rings and hooking to the helmet lock in the bike can be tight too. The Explorer R chinstraps have very comfortable padding and liner surface. The antibacterial SHARK Explorer R Carbon lining includes natural bamboo fibers that are resistant to biological growth, keeping the liner longer in better shape. The removable lining can be easily taken off just in few seconds for a machine wash and the material dries also fast. Such long term and maintenance features are relevant for allroad motorcyclists riding also in warm, dusty conditions and in an active way.
The SHARK Explorer R Carbon helmet has also a unique storm collar feature which provides additional protection when the conditions get colder. The storm collar is waiting behind the zipper, fixed to the removable bottom cover of the helmet. Those who ride without the balaclava would benefit from the storm collar the most, but those who have a storm collar in the jacket such as the RUKKA Päijänne Gore-Tex® would hardly use it. Simply because the storm collar pulls a little bit when turning the head and proper storm collars in the jackets do no such thing.
The SHARK Explorer R Carbon motorcycle helmet is SHARK Tooth ready and integrates also with universal motorcycle bluetooth communication systems. The cheek pads have integrated speaker pockets which makes COM installation quick and simple. At the back below the bottom cover of the helmet, there is a battery chamber. How come this is not yet a standard to every single motorcycle helmet which is street legal? I have no double that communication systems would not be an important and integral part of motorcycling.
SHARK Explorer R Carbon Street Helmet Configuration
The SHARK Explorer R Carbon street helmet configuration includes a full-face visor with a spring loaded city ventilation position and a SHARK Autoseal closure mechanism. The visor closure pulls the shield against the sealing when the visor is in the lowest position. An integral drop down sun visor with a quick left hand up and down mechanism works beautifully. Integrated sun visors usually save the trouble of getting a second shield for the sunniest periods and even if you are wearing sun glasses, the sun visor works as a partial cover blocking the direct sun light to the eyes. The dark smoked sun visor works well when leaning forward like sports motorcyclists, but it`s a little bit short for an upright tour riding posture. Even in the lowest position a quarter of the vision remains uncovered which actually helps to read the instrumentation, but divides the view with a slightly disturbing edge. When using the offroad goggles, the sun visor naturally can not be used.
SHARK Explorer R Carbon Offroad Helmet Configuration
The SHARK Explorer R Carbon offroad helmet configuration replaces the full-face visor with SHARK Raw offroad goggles offering more ventilation through the eye port and additional sun cover with the adjustable peak. The design of the peak is open enough and the air flows through without creating an air buffer too much, but if the adjustment screw is not tightened good enough, the peak slides easily back to a most upright position. Even in the lowest position the peak hardly comes in the view and I would prefer adjusting it almost an inch lower. Any handyman can make an additional hole in the peak adjustment and take care of this right away.
The SHARK Explorer R Carbon motorcycle helmet comes with SHARK Raw offroad goggles providing a wider and sharper vision thanks to optically correct Carl Zeiss double lenses. The goggle frame is stiffer than the most, but it`s also more curved which creates one of the widest view angles. These OE goggles integrate with the Explorer R eye port closely and for me also on the face which makes the overall package rather compact preventing some of the additional ventilation on the face. In hot conditions the close design works against the allroad motorcycling requirements, but since the Explorer R is not designed for the hottest conditions, this follows the overall nature of the helmet. The inner lens is treated with an anti-fog film and the outer lens is equipped with an anti-scratch film. The dark smoked lens works very well in the broad day light, but I would rather have clear lenses since I am using sun glasses anyhow and I want to ride also after the sunset. The SHARK Raw goggles are quick release hooked to the helmet at the back. The other side of the coin is that the goggles can not be used with other helmets without additional straps or similar hooks on the helmet. The SHARK Raw -goggles have removable nose shield which gives additional protection against hard shell insects and flying gravel from other vehicles.

SHARK Explorer R Carbon Helmet Sharktooth® Headset Bluetooth® Intercom
The SHARK Explorer R Carbon motorcycle helmet has been prepared for a basic Sharktooth® headset and bike to bike or rider to pillion Bluetooth® intercom system. The Sharktooth® can be connected wirelessly to mobile phones, MP3 players and GPS navigators using Bluetooth® 2.1 technology. The intercom is able to connect up to 8 headsets and 3 devices. This Multi-point feature allows also 2 mobile phones connections simultaneously. The intercom range between direct connections could be up to 400 meters (0.25mi.) and 500 meters (0.31mi.) with the same brand. The Sharktooth® helmet headset has intelligent DSP noise and echo cancellation features, increasing the talking clarity in loud conditions. The battery lasts 700hours in StandBy and offers approximately 10 hours music or talk with someone. The SHARK Explorer R Carbon Sharktooth® helmet headset has voice pickup feature allowing literally handsfree operations. The VOX command technology allows to activate and reject incoming phone and intercom calls by voice. The Sharktooth® also supports voice dialing as long as the mobile phone has such features. Volume levels would be controlled automatically, but the rider can also fine tune the levels with the buttons.
From the entertainment point of view the Sharktooth® helmet headset can be only wirelessly connected to a Bluetooth® MP3 player. There are no audio plugs or FM radio features. The headset supports the basic MP3 player controls such as skip forward and back, but the rest must be operated with the player itself. The installation of the Sharktooth® headset to the SHARK Explorer R Carbon motorcycle helmet is rather simple, but the collar of the helmet gives a light resistance due to a tight fit. Nevertheless wires have enough room and the complete setup is good. Even the charging plug hides behind the collar piece and can be accessed easily. The speakers attach to a VELCRO® surface on the shell interior and remain well in place. The microphone has enough room in the front and the cheek pad locks the boom in place. Thanks to a separate battery pack, the control unit itself is very streamlined and aerodynamically small. The key Sharktooth® helmet headset and intercom features are:
- GPS, mobile phone and MP3 compatible
- Stereo Bluetooth® 2.1 technology
