Alpinestars CALAMA dryStar® Motorcycle Jacket & Pants
Alpinestars CALAMA dryStar® motorcycle jacket and pants are designed for all year round adventure touring in versatile weather conditions. With technical base and mid layers the CALAMA suit handles pretty much anything. The jacket and the pants include several removable layers which makes it slightly heavy compared to suits with fixed layers, but it makes the CALAMA also more versatile and capable. The CALAMA concept may be partially traditional and the materials not the most famous, but the details are good and the level of finishing is very high. The liners need some of the luggage capacity if the temperature is high and changes along the road may require to remove or add some of the layers which is not always desirable beside the road from the pants point of view. Nevertheless, the Alpinestars CALAMA dryStar® motorcycle jacket and pants are very competitive in allroad touring.
The Alpinestars CALAMA dryStar® motorcycle shell jacket and pants itself are not waterproof and therefore removable dryStar® liner suit becomes necessary. In the coldest conditions the CALAMA jacket and pants have a removable thermal liner which means that the suit offers in fact 4 configurations in one. The first includes all 3 layers which can be also zipper connected with the pants, delivering the highest protection against the elements. The second and the third configuration removes the thermal or the dryStar® liner from the shell jacket and the pants. The 4TH configuration removes both liners and maximizes the comfort in the hottest conditions. High temperature features can be improved by choosing the light gray option with yellow or blue accents. Exceptionally the Alpinestars CALAMA dryStar® motorcycle jacket and pants have large gray areas, high visibility accents and only small areas in black.
Alpinestars CALAMA dryStar® MC Jacket & Pants Features
The shell of the Alpinestars CALAMA dryStar® motorcycle jacket and pants is made of polyester which is not waterproof itself, nor flows the air through freely enough from the ventilation point of view. Therefore air vents and air flow through panels are necessary and on top of that the light gray main color would improve the comfort in the direct sun light. On high wear and impact areas the CALAMA jacket and pants are reinforced with tear and abrasion resistant RipStop fabric. The jacket has VELCRO® arm adjustment belts to keep the armors in place at all times. The elbow flex panels eliminate pull and increase comfort. The waist line has belt adjustment on both sides and hem extension panels. The cuffs are zippers closed and VELCRO® adjusted which is the best and most practical way. A 2 way YKK zipper main closure is practical in use because the hem could be kept open and loose while the jacket is still closed. This improves the ventilation in the hottest conditions when even the smallest improvement would be appreciated. The Alpinestars CALAMA dryStar® motorcycle jacket and pants have quite many YKK zippers all around the garment and they are not waterproof. Therefore main closures are sealed with overlapping flaps and drain gutters.
The Alpinestars CALAMA dryStar® motorcycle jacket and pants are made waterproof with a full dryStar® liner suit. The dryStar® liner has taped seams ensuring the watertightness on a long run. The liner is almost like an outdoor jacket, but the small fastening straps all around the jacket and the zippers on the chest, would make it a strange choice on the streets. Nevertheless, I encourage the manufacturer to develop the liner to match the general outdoor line of jackets so that the riders could use it as wind and rain protection after the ride too. This would mean that the rider has one less jacket to pack in the panniers and there would be slightly more luggage capacity for necessities, but also less weight. This applies also to the removable thermal liners which could be used as a street jackets too. In this case 2 jackets less in the panniers is something relevant on a long trip and especially when riding with the passenger.
The Alpinestars CALAMA dryStar® motorcycle jacket and pants have a JET Ventilation System JVS with 4 air vents on the front and 3 at the back. 2 rather large intakes on the chest and 2 smaller on the upper arms. On the back of the jacket the large exhaust can be opened wide and adjusted with 2 zippers. The CALAMA pants have 2 exhausts on thighs, but by leaving the front pockets empty and the zippers open, the moisture evaporation between the legs would be improved too. When conditions are extremely hot, the sleeves of the CALAMA jacket can be removed completely, including the elbow and shoulder armors. Nevertheless, the mesh liner sleeves which host the armor inserts, can be zipper reconnected with the CALAMA jacket and volume adjusted accordingly. From the safety point of view this is unique and an ideal solution, but the neat mesh liner also looks good. On top of everything else, the large light gray areas minimize the direct sun light effect on the garment which is a significant factor at high temperatures.
The Alpinestars CALAMA dryStar® motorcycle shell jacket has 4 outside, 4 inside pockets, one hidden pocket and a large utility bag at the back. The 2 front pockets are waterproof and the left side pocket has a hidden compartment at the back side for travel documents or extra cash for example. The pocket can be also removed thanks to the VELCRO® and snap fasteners. The utility bag can be extended with an additional zipper on the edge and it has a fixed belt. The utility bag can be used as a travel bag after the ride. The dryStar liner jacket has one hidden inside pocket and the thermal liner has also one inside pocket which makes all together 12 pockets in the jacket alone. 4 of them are waterproof, but by using watertight pouches and bags any pocket could carry sensitive items. The Alpinestars CALAMA dryStar® motorcycle pants have 4 outside pockets including 2 large thigh pockets which makes all together staggering 16 pockets.
The Alpinestars CALAMA dryStar® motorcycle jacket and pants impact protection is generated with CE approved SAS-Tec polyurethane foam inserts. The armor inserts are soft, flexible and have no hard edges in normal conditions, but up on an impact the foam becomes in an instant hard and absorbs the force. The CALAMA jacket comes as STD with elbow and shoulder inserts, but the back protector and the chest inserts are accessories. An Alpinestars NUCLEON KR2i back and KRCi chest protectors provide the CE level 2 protection, ventilation holes and fit in the insert pockets. A pair of Alpinestars BIONIC chest protectors would be also in line with the intent and increase the level of protection from the minimum. The SAS-Tec protectors are full of holes which improves moisture evaporation in warm conditions. The armor inserts can be removed easily for a machine wash. The CALAMA jacket has high visibility arm bands with neon yellow accents and reflector stripes in small pockets on the upper arms. These arm bands are very simple, effective and a low cost safety feature which can be used in emergency situations and poor light conditions as additional protection. The key Alpinestars CALAMA dryStar® motorcycle jacket features are:
- Polyester shell structure
- dryStar® waterproof liner jacket
- Polyester thermal liner jacket

The fixed collar of the CALAMA jacket is one of the tallest, thick and soft from inside which makes it comfortable and more protective against the elements. The flap on the front can be hocked on the left side leaving the middle open and providing direct air flow around the neck which is a welcome detail at high temperatures. The collar can be also folded in half and secured with a snap fastener at the back which allows better air flow around the neck, but the thick collar resists that and I would prefer a separate storm collar which could be again removed when the temperature rises.
Alpinestars CALAMA dryStar® Motorcycle Pants Features
The Alpinestars CALAMA dryStar® motorcycle pants have the same basic configuration as the jacket. The shell material is non waterproof polyester, the liner pants include the dryStar® waterproof membrane and a thermal polyester liner which are both detachable and can be used with the shell independently. Areas exposed to highest mechanical wearing are reinforced with RipStop. The JET Ventilation System JVS includes 2 exhausts on thighs and the flex panel between the legs allows efficient air flow through the CALAMA shell garment. By leaving the front pockets empty and the zippers open, further moisture evaporation and air flow can be generated against the hottest conditions. On top of that large light gray surfaces minimize the direct sun light effect on the garment. The CALAMA pants have CE certified level 2 SAS-Tec impact protectors on the knees, but there are no hip armors as STD feature. Nevertheless, there are hip protector insert pockets which could be armed with Alpinestars NUCLEON KRCi hip armor inserts.
The Alpinestars CALAMA dryStar® motorcycle pants have VELCRO® waist line adjustments and suspenders with a tall back side flap which gives more protection for the lower back during the cold rides. Those who prefer riding without the suspenders can remove it within seconds and use the VELCRO® waist line adjustments alone. The CALAMA shell pants have large flex panels on the back of the calves, between the legs and on the lower back, eliminating pull and providing comfort on the saddle. In addition the dryStar® liner has flex panels above the knees, at the back of the calves, between the legs and on the lower back. The cuffs can not be adjusted, but nevertheless they open wide enough to put the boots on and place the pant legs on top of the boots. Without the liners the CALAMA pant legs are loosely on top the boots which may cause sometimes sticking to the offroad foot pegs when placing the feet on the ground. The YKK zipper front closure has storm flaps in the front and at the back. The storm flap on the front side has a metal hook closure which is not the most secure from nature and every now and then it may open up. This is very common way of closing the front, but hardly the best solution. The key Alpinestars CALAMA dryStar® motorcycle pants features are:
