KTM 1190 Adventure 2013 Allroad Touring Enduro
The Austrian manufacturer KTM has finally launched a real touring enduro model KTM1190 Adventure 2013 which is a brand new and a true competitor for the allroad category leader BMW R1200GS 2013. KTM has very strong sports and racing enduro competence which led earlier to models KTM990 Adventure and more extreme Adventure R, but there was no real allroad touring enduro until now and due to the fact that KTM factory has a lot of history and experience in the field, one can expect a lot from the KTM1190 Adventure 2013.
The standard KTM1190 Adventure 2013 is designed and very much capable for true allroad touring with serious mileage. The 1190 has inherited the famous KTM handling and offers on top sportier performance than before, perhaps even one of the sportiest in the category. The basic 1190 is slightly less adventurous than the R model, but it can carry a big load and provides more comfortable riding with a passenger. The 1190 has very good riding ergonomics and you can adjust the seat, foot pegs (10 mm.), handlebar (+/-10 mm.) and the windscreen (25 mm.). Without a doubt KTM1190 Adventure 2013 is also an excellent every day bike.
KTM 1190 Adventure 2013 Features
What KTM really can and is able to deliver with the KTM 1190 Adventure 2013, is state of the art handling features, leading power to weight ratio and technical endurance. The 1190 is on top of that also comfortable and intelligent allroad touring enduro. The ABS can be switched to offroad allowing rear wheel locking and sliding while the front wheel is controlled by the ABS. The traction control provides 4 riding modes and a real off setting. The KTM1190 Adventure 2013 is also ride by wire throttled which translates together with the anti-hopping clutch into sophisticated throttle response to both directions, but the cruise control seems to be missing. I find that very odd. This kind of touring enduro should have the cruise control as standard since there is already everything else. The new 1190 V2 engine LC8 offers high performance and a long service interval of 15 000 km (9321 mi.). First time the KTM seat is divided in two providing better support and 15 mm. adjustment.
The standard KTM1190 Adventure tyres Continental Trail Attack II are quite urban from nature and may need to be changed depending on your routing and preferences, but unlike BMW R1200GS 2013, the cross spoked rims are not limiting your options. Perhaps the weight competition has forced KTM to go with a average size fuel tank (23L, 6.8USgal., 5.06UKgal.) which keeps the rider checking the nearest station and carrying a reserve canister, even with improved fuel economy. The KTM 1190 Adventure 2013 is also a sports touring enduro from nature and slow riding seems hardly possible from the consumption point of view. Note that the minimum octane requirement is 95RON, but there is a optional fuel dongle to adjust the fuel mapping for lower octane settings. The center stand comes not as standard for the basic model. The suspension and ground clearance speaks for less aggressive adventure touring than the R -model. The standard KTM1190 Adventure 2013 technical features are:
- Seat hight 860 / 875 mm., 33.86 / 34.45in.
- Cross spoked rims
- Tyres 120/70 ZR19 and rear 170/60 ZR17
- Engine type V2

- 12V cockpit power outlet
- Electronic immobiliser System

- Payload 228kg (502.7lb.)

Chain Driven KTM 1190 Adventure 2013
The absence of a driveshaft comes naturally from KTM factory. In order to transfer the power the most efficient way, keep the overall weight as low as possible and maintain the best possible maneuverability, a chain drive needed to deliver the power to the ground. Although X-ring chains are today extremely good and require less maintenance, the KTM rider has to take care of the lubrication every now and then. Therefore a lubrication system could be a practical way of taking care of it. Otherwise the rider needs to spray the chains regularly on the center stand.
KTM 1190 Adventure 2013 Instrumentation
The KTM 1190 Adventure 2013 cockpit instrumentation is very much up to date and clearly comprehensive. There are 2 LCD displays, warning symbol lights and a traditional tachometer in the middle. At the left there is also 12V power outlet for electronics. The left hand LCD display provides detailed onboard computer information which can grouped individually and set as a favorite:
- Odometer total
- Trip 1 & 2
- Trip time counters
- Average speed
- Average fuel consumption
- Fuel range
- Air temperature
- Battery voltage
- Oil temperature
- Warning messages
- Traction control & ABS settings
- Riding mode settings
- Payload EDS settings (optional)
- Suspension control EDS settings (optional)
- Shifting indicator settings
- Tyre pressure (optional)
- Grip heater settings (optional)
- Fuel level
- Coolant level
- Gear in use
- Riding mode in use
- Payload setting in use (optional)
KTM 1190 Adventure 2013 Equipment
The standard KTM 1190 Adventure 2013 requires more protection. A engine guard and crash bars would be in order. Since the 1190 is chain driven and the center stand does not come as standard, continue the list with that. The standard windscreen can be adjusted 25 mm. which is not a lot and since the frame and ergonomics are quite large, taller riders probably need the 105 mm. higher touring windscreen or a spoiler. Those who want to use also lower octane can choose a special fuel dongle which provides proper fuel mapping. On top of that traction control and ABS can be switched off for a long term (i.e. after restart). Of course the KTM 1190 Adventure 2013 needs a good luggage system too, but as long as the routing is reasonable and not too adventurous, the rest concerns travelling equipment.
KTM 1190 Adventure 2013 Comparison
In comparison to BMW R1200GS 2014, the KTM1190 Adventure has cross spoked rims, adjustable footrests, hand guards, WP steering damper, LED indicators, onboard computer and traction control as standard. The more versatile adjustments, the more freedom for individual setups, but the steering damper becomes interesting on challenging gravel roads where rocks and potholes are waiting. It simply makes the riding easier and calms the steering when needed the most. On the other hand, the KTM1190 Adventure 2013 has no cruise control, engine guard nor shaft drive and since it is totally new model, the selection of accessory and allroad touring equipment is smaller than the GS alternatives. Today also KTM provides electronically controlled suspension systems EDS as an option. That should be interesting for touring riders having often different riding and payload requirements.
VS YAMAHA XT1200Z SuperTenere 2013
Compared to the YAMAHA XT1200Z SuperTenere 2013, the KTM1190 Adventure 2013 is 31kgs (68.3lbs) lighter, offers 19kgs (41.9lbs) more payload capacity, 38HP more engine performance, the same fuel capacity, but no shaft drive and 150W less alternator capacity. From the equipment point of view, they both have the same size cross spoked rims and electronic riding aids, but the 1190 traction control MTC is more advanced and the onboard computer more comprehensive. The KTM has also better wind coverage with quick adjustment. From the riding point of view, the KTM1190 Adventure 2013 is a lot sportier and due to better handling, the KTM is more ready for adventurous allroad touring. The YAMAHA XT1200Z SuperTenere 2013 is more traditional allroad touring enduro for slightly less demanding riding conditions.
VS APRILIA 1200 Caponord 2013
Compared to the new APRILIA 1200 Caponord 2013, the KTM 1190 Adventure 2013 is 21kg (46.3lb.) lighter, carries 19kg (41.9lb.) more payload, offers 1L (0.26USgal., 0.22UKgal.) more fuel capacity, 23HP more V2 performance and has cross spoked rims as standard. They both are chain driven and sporty touring enduros from nature. The Caponord character consists perhaps more of sporty riding features like the 17 inch front wheel. The KTM is strong in everything and offers wider spectrum of routing alternatives on top.
VS KTM 1190 Adventure R 2013
In comparison to the more aggressive and adventurous KTM1190 Adventure R, the basic KTM 1190 Adventure 2013 model has 30 mm. less suspension travel and ground clearance which translates also to 15-30 mm. difference in seat hight. The Adventure R has also tyre pressure monitoring system, center stand and crash bars as standard. The wheels are also bigger making the Adventure R model much more comfortable off the road. The R seat is made in one piece making the ride on two slightly less comfortable.
