Technical BASE & MID Layers for Motorcycling
Technical base and mid layers are very useful in order to extend the motorcycle jacket and pants features beyond the ordinary and to increase comfort. Proper technical layers keep the rider comfortable at all times even when the shell suit is not the most ideal for the conditions in question. This is even more important in active offroad adventure riding and on a trip with versatile weather conditions, but without any doubt beneficial for every motorcyclist around the globe. Short rides could be done with insufficient motorcycle clothing, but longer trips can not. Every single piece of clothing should be designed for motorcycling and weather conditions in question. Improper clothing reduces functionality, comfort and creates problems which could even cut short the trip in the worst scenarios. Mainly due to modest temperature regulation, moisture handling and poor anatomical features, the non technical layers are problematic in more demanding conditions and adventure touring. In addition technical layers that are not designed for motorcycling, have often a wrong cut which reduces functionality. The difference to high quality technical base and mid layers which are designed for motorcycling is very clear.
Technical BASE & MID Layers Protect
Technical base and mid layers for motorcycling have three important dimension. First of all they balance the body temperature, protect the skin from abrasion damages and remain in an anatomic shape. Generally people think that the base and mid layers are mainly used in colder conditions, but technical layers are extremely beneficial also in warm and hot conditions when the ventilation and the hydration becomes critical. Technical layers transfer the excess heat and moisture from the skin to the more or less ventilated space below the motorcycle shell suit. Due to the highly breathable layers, the body remains cooler and the rider feels comfortable, but also the skin remains healthy for another day on the saddle. Note that a proper base layer with long sleeves and full length of pant legs would protect the skin also from the shell suit interior and the armor inserts. Especially hot weather MC garments can have hard seams, pretty sharp edges and very open mesh liners which can brake a hot skin too easily. Naturally the rider needs to take care of the hydration by drinking enough fluids, but the technical base and mid layers make sure that extra heat leaves the body fast and safe enough.
Technical base and mid layers for motorcycling are not just working efficiently with the moisture and the body heat. The technical layers are also able to keep the shape and fit much better than non technical alternatives. Even when moist the technical layers remain much better in the anatomic form almost like a second skin. Unlike the conventional cotton fabrics, the technical clothing resists deformation and building wrinkles while riding. Clothing out of shape rubs the skin and creates pressure points on sensitive areas at high temperatures. Especially the bottom area is very crucial and could kill the joy of riding very quickly. This is one of the most important factor from the long hours on the saddle point of view when a damaged skin has not enough time to heel after the daily ride. In addition the non technical base layers have often thicker seams that are not placed ideally, press the skin and could potentially become more or less painful. Note that this applies also to technical base and mid layers that are not designed for motorcycling. Another clear difference in design would be the collar area which should not be in conflict with the jacket, storm collar, neck warmer, balaclava, neck brace or the helmet.
